England face Hazard and Lukaku

In case you weren’t familiar with the group draw for the World Cup from December 1st, here is England’s group:

This means that England’s final game will be against Belgium. Meaning a potential deciding game could be against the likes of Hazard, Lukaku, Fellaini, and the rest of a very strong Belgium squad. Should be a cracker!

Still, we have to get past Tunisia and Panama first. You may scoff and think those are easy games, but if recent history dictates anything, it is that there are no easy games.

But still, I have put the fixture list in my diary – meaning that now I can really start getting excited.

And the good news to all England fans is:

We don’t face Iceland!

I know that, since they qualified, you’ve all been terrified about the prospect. But luckily they will not be our undoing unless we both get to the later rounds – and we can dread the fixture then.

The most gutting thing for me was that England wasn’t seeded in the pot containing the top eight teams. With the players we have available we should be right up there, but it looks as if the let downs of so many years are truly getting to us.

Let’s be fair – England haven’t won a knockout game at a major tournament in, what, fourteen years? The golden generation brought us nothing. Capello’s strong leadership let us down. Hodgson had his quitting speech ready before the match against Iceland had even ended.

Will this be the year we get it right?

We say that every year and, honestly, no one is holding their breath.

But it would be nice, wouldn’t it?
